RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
